He is looking for a compass, and an a tattoo of Danko appears on her back. Samuel sends out Edgar to retrieve the compass and then kill Danko. When Edgar first objects to this assignment, Samuel tortures him with the ink.

Later, Samuel conjurs up another tattoo and the image of Hiro appears. Lydia tells him that Hiro was at the carnival fourteen years ago. Samuel thinks that Hiro could help them fix tha past so he asks another carnie who has the ability to send people back in time, to send him back to that moment. Samuel and Hiro then meet in the past. Hiro is reluctant to change the past, but Samuel makes him see that one can un-do one's wrongs.

Quotes

My brother Joseph and I have had two families. The first one, well, let's just say it didn't work out too well. But over the years, we've made ourselves a new one. And it was to this family, all of you, that his heart really belonged. You see, a family is something that Joseph and I needed. It offered us protection from the outside world. A world that never understood or appreciated what makes us different. There are others like us out there. In the shadows, in the light. Each grasping for meaning in a world that won't accept them for who they really are. They, like us, are blessed; gifted with extraordinary abilities. And they, like us, struggle with finding their place in an ordinary world. Haunted by their past, from those who would harm them and keep them from their destiny. Every one of them deserves a chance to be who they really are. But to what end? For what purpose? Here in this place, we offer salvation. We offer hope. We offer redemption. And one by one they will come, to our side, to our family. And they will find their way home. And all who have gathered will be strong. And all who have gathered will stand in unison. I say it's time we found our way back home again. Find your way home, brother. (Robert opening the show with Samuel's speech)

Yes well, I left out the part about vengeance. (Samuel to Edgar)

Name's Samuel and I think we're gonna be great friends. (Samuel to Hiro)

4.03 Ink

Original air date: 28 September 2009

Samuel is in his trailer with Lydia. He tells her that he might have found someone to replace his brother Joseph. He dresses up in a suit and a tie, saying that it's his responsibility to go out there and see if the candidate deserves a place at their table. Lydia asks if he's going to go back home as well, while he's out there. Samuel says he never wants to go back to that place. Before leaving, Samuel picks up a jar of ink and uses his powers to suck the ink into his hand.

Later, Samuel is at the hospital waiting for Peter. Peter enters the room, and Samuel is pretending to be William Hooper, a man Peter supposedly saved from a burning bus. Samuel says that he is suing Peter because Peter was reckless and dislocated Samuel's shoulder while rescuing him. He tells Peter that he cannot work anymore because of the injury, and that he can't support his family. Peter claims that he has never seen William before, and that this must be a scam.

Samuel breaks into Peter's apartment, where he finds a newspaper clipping about the bus crash. He then uses the ink to insert a picture of himself into the clipping. Peter comes home and finds the picture.

Outside, Peter catches up to Samuel and apologizes to him for not remembering him from the crash. Samuel tells Peter about his brother and that they grew up nearby. He also tells Peter that he will drop the lawsuit. Before going their separate ways, Peter tells Samuel that he thinks Samuel should pay his childhood home a visit.

Samuel approaches a big house and rings the doorbell. A woman answers the door, and Samuel, explaining that he grew up in the house, asks if he could take a look around. The woman brushes him off, saying that it's not a good time.

Peter is called to the scene of an accident. Samuel's childhood home has been destroyed in what they say is a sinkhole incident. Samuel watches Peter without making himself noticed. At the same time, a compass starts emerging on Peter's arm.

Later, Samuel tells Edgar that something must be wrong with Sylar. He asks Edgar to deliver some tickets to the Baltimore police department, to the cop who chased Sylar. Samuel has the idea that they need to jump-start the real Sylar.

Samuel watches as Edgar demonstrates his powers to Sylar. He then breaks things up, saying that there is someone he would like for Sylar to meet. As they walk, some airplanes pass over them, and Sylar says that he remembers what it's like flying. Samuel introduces Sylar to Damien, who has the power to bring out Sylar's true memories.

Samuel walks up to the police officer, who has come to the carnival with his family. He welcomes him to the carnival and when he is being shown a picture of Sylar, Samuel replies that he has never seen him before.

(Tattoos also form in the shapes of Noah, Claire and Sylar.)

Hiro goes back in time to the diner where Charlie worked three years earlier to save her life. There, he encounters Samuel who questions Hiro's motives for being there. Hiro declares that saving Charlie is worth the risk of changing the past. After an encounter with past Sylar and when Charlie's life has indeed been saved, Hiro is happy that he and Charlie finally will get their happy ending. Suddenly though, Charlie disappears and Samuel tells Hiro that he's brought her to the carnival, only to get to Hiro. Charlie is in fact stuck somewhere in time, the last act performed by Arnold who passed away from that last strain, and Samuel is the only one who knows where she is. Eight weeks ago, Mohinder goes to the carnival in search of Samuel. He encounters Joseph, Samuel's brother, before briefly meeting Samuel. Joseph brings Mohinder inside a trailer, explaining to him that Samuel has no idea how powerful he can be, and that Mohinder needs to burn the film. In Mohinder's hotel room eight weeks ago, Hiro emerges and manages to freeze time and switch the film before Mohinder gets a chance to burn it. When time unfreezes, Mohinder instead sets fire to some other film. Samuel bursts into Mohinder's room and demands to know what is on the film. Samuel has had enough and assures Claire that no one will believe her. Edgar, with Noah and Eli following, steps forward and says he knows the truth. Eli admits that Samuel had him kill Lydia. The family leaves the carnival, leaving Samuel fighting on his own.

Starting off the big show, Samuel enters the stage and gets the crowd cheering. He starts shaking the ground and people run away in panic.

Peter, having managed to catch Samuel's powers, knocks him off the stage. The two face off backstage. Samuel says that Peter should know what it's like living in the shadow of a brother. Peter replies that his brother never let him down.

Hiro arrives at the carnival and Claire asks him to teleport everyone out of there. Noah stays behind to take care of Samuel.

When they're all gone, Samuel's powers shut down. He starts screaming, asking where they all went. As sirens are heard, Samuel is down on his knees, and he is soon arrested by the company.
